It welcomes work that takes literature, culture, art, media, philosophy, history, society, technology, ecology and other forms of human and cultural experience as its objects of inquiry, while remaining attentive to the different methods and intellectual traditions through which those objects can be understood.

The journal’s commitment to interdisciplinarity is not simply a matter of combining two or more disciplines within the same essay. We are particularly interested in work in which an encounter between disciplines changes the question being asked, the way an object is understood, or the methods through which it can be approached. A literary text may therefore become a site for thinking about architecture, ecology, technology, philosophy, medicine or political history; a film may open questions of urban space, memory, geography or material culture; an image, game, digital environment, object, archive, landscape or built space may become a humanities object in its own right.

The journal welcomes research in literary and cultural studies, comparative literature, philosophy, history and intellectual history, language and linguistics, translation studies, film and media studies, visual and performing arts, gender and sexuality studies, religious and theological studies, cultural geography, urban and spatial studies, environmental and ecological humanities, digital humanities and related fields. These categories are indicative rather than exhaustive. We particularly welcome work emerging from newer or developing areas of humanities inquiry, as well as scholarship that brings established fields into conversation with disciplines, methods, technologies or forms of cultural practice with which they have not traditionally been associated.

We are interested in both the interpretation of cultural forms and the conditions in which those forms are produced, circulated, experienced, remembered, contested and transformed. Accordingly, the journal encourages work on texts and textual cultures alongside film, television, photography, painting, architecture, design, comics and graphic narratives, popular culture, music, games, digital and networked media, material objects, archives, landscapes, cities, infrastructures and other cultural formations.

Work engaging with scientific or technological subjects is welcome where the central inquiry remains grounded in humanities questions and methods. This includes, among other areas, medical humanities, environmental humanities, science and technology studies, digital humanities and the humanities of emerging media and technologies.

The Apollonian also recognises that humanities scholarship takes more than one form. Alongside research articles, the journal considers critical and personal essays, translations, interviews, book reviews and selected creative and visual forms. Such contributions are not treated simply as supplements to academic research. Where appropriate, they can constitute distinct ways of thinking, interpreting, remembering, documenting or representing cultural experience. The journal therefore welcomes thoughtful engagements between critical scholarship and creative practice, while maintaining appropriate standards of editorial and intellectual rigour for each form.

The Apollonian has a particular interest in thematic conversations. It regularly considers special and guest-edited issues that bring together scholars and practitioners around a question, concept, cultural formation, medium, historical problem or emerging field of inquiry. Proposals for such issues are welcome where the proposed theme has a clear intellectual rationale and where its interdisciplinary possibilities extend beyond the simple juxtaposition of papers from different fields.

The Apollonian welcomes scholarship working across geographical and cultural contexts. We are especially interested in work that takes seriously the movement of ideas, forms, people, texts, technologies and cultural practices across regions and traditions, as well as work that questions inherited hierarchies between centres and margins of knowledge. Comparative and transnational approaches are encouraged, but geographical breadth in itself is not a criterion: what matters is the strength of the question and the contribution the work makes to humanities scholarship.

The journal seeks submissions that are theoretically informed, attentive to their objects and capable of making a clear scholarly contribution. Interdisciplinary work need not draw upon a large number of theories or disciplines to qualify as such; methodological or conceptual precision is valued over breadth for its own sake. We welcome both established and emerging approaches, including work that tests, revises, challenges or brings into conversation existing critical frameworks.

Publisher

Mrs Mili Bhattacharya
55/10, Udham Singh Sarani
Ashram Para
Siliguri – 734001
Dist.
